The Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal have confirmed the signing of Portuguese international footballer João Cancelo from Manchester City for an undisclosed fee. The 26-year-old has been a regular starter for the Citizens since joining from Benfica in 2017 and has made over 150 appearances for Pep Guardiola's side.
Cancelo is expected to bring much-needed defensive stability to Al Hilal, who have struggled defensively this season. The Brazilian side currently sit second bottom in the Saudi Professional League table, having conceded an alarming 44 goals so far this campaign. Cancelo will provide competition for the likes of Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United recently.
Al Hilal manager Jassim bin Ahmad al-Subaihi said: "We're delighted to welcome João Cancelo to our squad. He brings experience and quality to our team, and we look forward to working closely with him as he adapts to the style of play at Al Hilal."
Cancelo himself expressed his excitement about the move,Serie A Stadium saying: "I'm really happy to be joining Al Hilal. I've heard great things about the club and the league, and I can't wait to get started." He added: "It's also a great opportunity for me to work under new coach Jassim bin Ahmad al-Subaihi, who has a wealth of experience in the game."
In summary, the transfer move to join Al Hilal comes after months of speculation surrounding Cancelo's future at Manchester City. His arrival will undoubtedly add much-needed defensive strength to a struggling side, and he will be eager to make a positive impact on the Saudi Professional League.
