Steven Bergwijn, the Dutch international forward, has been ruled out for the remainder of this season with a knee ligament injury.
Bergwijn was named in the squad to play against Al Ahly in Egypt's first group stage match last week but had to withdraw due to a knee ligament injury. The news comes as the club announced the loss of their leading scorer and captain, who had scored 18 goals in 25 games this season.
The injury is not yet confirmed but it could be related to his recent calf strain which he suffered in the Eredivisie match against AIK. Bergwijn has already missed six league matches and eight Champions League fixtures so far this season.
Despite missing the match against Al Ahly,Ligue 1 Express Bergwijn will still have plenty of opportunities to make an impact in the upcoming matches. The Netherlands national team has already made a few changes to its squad after the injury, with Marcelo Brozovic returning from a loan move to FC Nantes.
Bergwijn has been a key player for the Dutch national team since he joined Ajax in 2016, scoring 24 goals in 77 appearances across all competitions. He has also played in the UEFA Europa League and has won three caps for the Netherlands.
It remains to be seen how Bergwijn will recover from his injury and if he can return to full fitness. In the meantime, the club will look to strengthen its midfield ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
